SYDNEY, NSW, Australia - Stocks in Asia on Thursday were decidedly mixed.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 slipped 93.80 points or 0.36 percent to 2,564.34.
The Australian All Ordinaries gained 16.20 points or 0.24 percent to 6,742.70.
The Hang Seng in Hong Kong declined 129.41 points or 0.49 percent to 26,414.34.
China's Shanghai Composite was trending in the opposite direction, falling 15.78 points or 0.47 percent, to close at 3,363.09.
On foreign exchange markets the U.S. dollar was slightly stronger. The euro slipped to 1.1849 by late trading in Sydney on Thursday. The British pound eased to 1.3238. The Japanese yen was a fraction lower at 103.86. The Swiss franc was little changed at 0.9107.
The Canadian dollar inched down to 1.3086. The Australian dollar was a few points lower at 0.7291, while the New Zealand dollar remained strong, last trading at 0.6903.
Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrials had lost 344.93 points or 1.16 percent at 29,435.42.
The Nasdaq Composite shed 97.74 points or 0.82 percent to 11,801.60.
The Standard and Poor's 500 lost 41.73 points or 1.16 percent to 3,567.80.
