BEIRUT, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Lebanese army on Tuesday thwarted an attempt to smuggle 90 Syrians into the country in the northeastern Baalbek-Hermel governorate bordering Syria, the National News Agency reported.
A Lebanese citizen responsible for the smuggling was arrested and referred to judicial bodies for investigations and other legal procedures.
In recent weeks, Lebanon's security agencies have prevented thousands of Syrians from entering Lebanese territories through illegal crossings.
The Lebanese government estimates that there are about 2 million Syrian refugees living in the country, making Lebanon the country hosting the largest number of refugees per capita.
The large number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon weighed heavily on the country's economy and infrastructure.
