PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia's Ministry of Justice is not aware of the current location of the Syrian mercenaries handed over to Damascus, Sputnik Armenia reports.

On January 14, Armenian authorities, through Turkish mediation, transferred to Syria two Syrian nationals sentenced to life imprisonment - Muhrab Muhammad al-Shkheri and Yusef Alabet al-Haji - clarifying that they would continue serving the remainder of their sentences in their home country.

Responding to questions about whether they are still serving their sentences and, if so, where, the Justice Ministry stated that "the transfer of the mentioned persons was carried out in accordance with the requirements of Armenian legislation, with the purpose of serving the remaining part of their sentence in a relevant penitentiary institution of Syria."

The ministry also noted that "after the transfer, the organization of sentence enforcement and its course fall under the jurisdiction of the competent authorities of the receiving state."

From a legal perspective, extradition and transfer are different procedures. In the case of extradition, a detained person is handed over to another state for prosecution or enforcement of a judgment. Transfer means sending a convicted person to their home country to serve their sentence.
